From First Kisses to Sex Work to Digital Desire: Covering Every Angle
This is a review of the book ‘Doing It: Women Tell the Truth About Great Sex’. The book an Australian collection of essays by a huge variety of women. Karen Pickering has collated these stories with emphasis on normalising what may feel ‘abnormal’, debunking shame, and addressing inequality in terms of how we think about sex and who ‘gets to’ do it.
And it’s enormous fun at times. One of my favourite essays is by a woman who wishes she’d listened to pop music in high school instead of indie music. She argues that the messaging of boy-singer pop songs is a lot more ‘love yourself/you don’t know you’re beautiful’ than angry boy indie bands whose lyrics often hated women (and she provides the receipts!). Who’d have thought?
It’s also unapologetically feminist in a way that will get you thinking about your own sex life in new and exciting ways. In fact, I’d suggest this book can really help improve your sex life (whether that’s on your own or with a partner/s).
