Doing a Mindfulness demonstration- or any demonstration- can be extremely embarrassing.
Making this video of a mindfulness demonstration reminded me of how uncomfortable it can be for those brave souls going to counselling.
Sitting there across from a stranger (at first).
Not being sure of what might come out.
Worrying about how you’ll be seen or heard or felt.
Wanting to be liked but also wanting to be real, which means letting the uglies out.
Needless to say, when I watched this mindfulness demonstration back and hit the part where I close my eyes I absolutely cringed. It was like that scene in About a Boy where Will watches on in horror as Fiona and Marcus play the piano and sing ‘Killing me Softly’ WITH THEIR EYES CLOSED.
But you know what?
Sometimes we just gotta put ourselves out there. If I want people to benefit from the awesomeness of mindfulness, then I can’t be embarrassed.
I need to bring you along with me.
I have to show myself to show you.
There’s something really lovely and raw and authentic in muddling through this stuff together. It’s also about finding a connection.
In online counselling, this particular Mindfulness demonstration has an added richness. If we are doing this technique in our different locations, we will most likely be listening to completely different sounds. Sharing those as we practice brings a new curiosity, a slightly different element of hopefulness and deepening awareness of self as well as another.
Even with our eyes closed.
I strongly urge you to take a moment afterwards to stop, and then add what you can hear, right now, wherever you are in the comments below.
